Bit Trays for Milwaukee Packout Rolling Toolbox

Bit Trays for Milwaukee Packout Rolling Toolbox

Description

For several years, I’ve been staring at the lid of the Packout rolling toolbox wondering if there is a way to use all that empty space between the ribbing. I almost made a bit holder a year ago, but I just didn’t think it was worth it. On a lark, I created a tray to hold several bit holders and posted the idea to Instagram a week ago.

Well that post exploded with people loving the idea, so I worked through about 10 iterations to design a bit tray that was up to my usual standards.

The bit trays press fit into the openings as the primary way of staying in place, but I still recommend using tape or glue to keep them from wiggling out as you repeatedly slam the lid shut.

It turns out the ribbing in the lid isn’t symmetrical, the top openings are taller than the bottom openings, so there need to be two versions of the bit tray: one for the top four spaces and one for the bottom four spaces. I’ve provided the STL files for each in the files section.

Files

Printer: Prusa i3 MK3
Slicer: Cura Slicer
Material: Inland PET-G
Resolution: 0.2mm with a 0.4mm nozzle
Wall Lines/Perimeters: 3
Infill: Minimum 10% Gyroid. The higher infill percentage the stronger the part.
Notes:

Instructions

Make sure you take notice of which file you are printing. You need to print a different tray for the top and bottom openings.

Applying VHB tape to the Back of the Bit Trays

To keep the bit trays in place, I recommend using a pressure sensitive tape like 3M VHB tape or using a few dabs of hot glue like in the video below.

  1. Hi Benjamen, will these fit in the “ammo” style packout or any other packout other than the rolling tote by chance.

    1. So Milwaukee for some reason decided to make every single lid slightly different, so there is no “one size fits all” solution. That’s why I had to design these: https://3dprints.electronsmith.com/bit-trays-for-milwaukee-packout-large-toolbox/ and these don’t even fit the small toolbox lid entirely either — I think 4 out of 8 locations work okay.

That said, there is one location in the top of the ammo can lid that these will fit into if you cut away a little tag of a support. The problem is that it is not a press fit and there is limited area for gluing or taping the holder in place.
