Interchangeable Peg System for Low Profile Compact Milwaukee Packout

Interchangeable Peg System for Milwuakee Packout Hero

Description

I saw Milwaukee’s new hole saw case and their new OMT blade case that use an interchangeable peg system and wondered why they just didn’t use the packout organizers instead. So I designed this compatible system that fits into both the compact and low-profile and standard height organizers.

This post is just for low-profile compact organizer accessories, later I will post pegs and grid for other Packout organizers.

Interchangeable Peg System for Milwuakee Packout with Bin

The system consists of two different grid panels — a middle panel and and end panel — that can be intermixed with both the standard bins and my bit bins.

Right now there are 3 types of pegs:

  • OMT holding pegs
  • 3/8″ socket holding pegs
  • 4.5″ cutoff disk holding pegs

I found most 1/2″ sockets are too tall for a compact Packout, so I’m not going to provide them, but you can create your own with the openSCAD model. I’m also open to creating holders for other size discs such as 3″ cutoff that are becoming popular.

Before you print these — Please follow the instructions! I have spent a lot of time getting the fit right and if you print something with the wrong layer height or orientation, the pegs might not lock as well. You’re always welcome to experiment, but try my settings first.

Files

Printer: Prusa i3 MK3
Slicer: PrusaSlicer
Material: Inland PET-G
Resolution: 0.3 mm with a 0.4mm nozzle for grids, 0.2 mm for the pegs.
Wall Lines/Perimeters: 2
Infill: Minimum 2 0% Gyroid. The higher infill percentage the stronger the part.
Notes: The pegs have their own support built in so print them in the default orientation and do not use supports.

Instructions

Socket Peg with Test Grid

Print a test grid and single peg first to test fit! Use the default orientation in the files. Print the grids with a 0.3 mm layer height. Once you are satisfied that the peg locks into place and stays, go ahead and print the larger middle and end grids. To fill an entire compact packout you will need 2 end grids and 1 middle grid. Or you can mix and match grids with bins.

To remove the supports on the pegs, just use a sharp knife to cut through the top and bottom of the support. If you are fulling lucky, you can just insert the peg into a hole in the grid and turn hard — that will usually snap the supports, but you need to remove the peg from the hole and clean out the supports because they block the peg from seating fully.

The grinder and OMT blade pegs are pretty self explanatory, except print them with a 0.2mm layer height or use “Adaptive Layer Height” and click “adaptive” button in Prusa Slicer. This will preserve correct dimensions in the Z- axis even if the feature height isn’t a multiple of the layer height. Use the default orientation in the files.

Socket Peg and Pin

Print the socket pegs with a 0.2 mm layer height or use “Adaptive Layer Height” like mentioned above. Use the default orientation in the files. Then print the pins with the socket size. I have provided most of the common Metric and SAE sizes in two zip files. The pins press fit into the hole in the top of the socket peg. The round part of the peg will be almost completely in the hole.

If you are swapping filament colors to make the pegs stand out, it’s okay just to finish the bottom of the peg in the same color as the text, it’ll be mostly hidden by the socket peg.

  1. I want to use this system in a deep profile packout. I want to put deepwell 1/2″ impact sockets. would you consider making a design for those with the size spikes?

    1. Do you mean the deep organizer (48-22-8432)? I don’t own one and don’t really have plans right now to support it. I am able to fit my 1/2″ deep well impact sockets in a standard depth packout and I have the files I need to release for those.

      1. Are you going to release those files at all. I’m looking at setting up either a standard depth organiser or a standard depth packout toolbox with a full stanley trade socket set that has 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 sockets ands ratchets

        1. Sorry, I have not been paying attention. Yes, I have printed a few of the trays, but I am looking at using the standard depth for a 1/2″ Milwaukee impact set

  2. Love your work! Can you make a peg for 3/8″ cutoff wheels? Thank you again for all that you have done!

    1. This was made using openSCAD, there is no way to create an obj or step file. You can download the model and open it in openSCAD and change the grid size. Or shoot me an email in the contact form with your rectangular dimensions and I can send you an STL.

  3. Can you make pegs for hole saws, like Milwaukee is using in the 49-56-1006 Small Hole Saw Case?

    1. If you download and run the openSCAD model in openSCAD, I have a drop down to create pegs for hole saw pegs for both the low profile and the regular height organizers. I just didn’t include them as STL files because there were already too many options to download.
